Another season wanes to an end
For the 14th consecutive season the Milwaukee Brewers baseball club has achieved a record that is at or below the .500 mark. I readily admit that I had towering hopes for the '06 season, but I should also disclose that I've had equally high hopes for every season that I can remember. That said, I really thought this year might be better. After all, we finished last season with an equal number of wins and losses. This isn't the greatest, but is at least something.
It is difficult to pin down a single major problem that caused the team to implode this year. It seems to me that the litany is quite similar to years past actually: too many strikeouts, inability to hit with runners in scoring position, inconsistent starting pitching, subpar defense, and a bullpen that was often achieving at the AAA level. The departure of Carlos Lee, a truly talented hitter, did nothing to help matters, but it was still necessary. In my baseball school starting pitching is always of utmost importance. This year was especially frustrating to me because of the injured and inconsitent starting staff. I argue that the Brewers possess an above average starting staff, but for reasons that I don't entirely understand they can never all click. Doug Davis is a very tough player to deal with. He will have a terrific start and seem to justify himself as a legitimate 3rd starter and then will have a followup outing that suggests he doesn't belong in the majors. Villaneuava(sp.?) looks promising which is good new because we may need a 4th and 5th starter next year depending on how things shake out in thee offseason. Another bright spot is Corey Hart. He seems to be a gritty, talented hitter. He won't blow you away, but he plays the game well.
Sheets
Capuano
Davis
Ohka
Villanueva?
Weeks 2B
Hart CF
Fielder 1B
????Mench will not do it here corner outfielder
Hall 3B
Hardy SS
Miller? C
????? corner outfielder
So we really need to corner outfielders; that's not exactly a small need when it comes to total production. Either way it figures to be a very young lineup.
